My mother bought this back in the 70's when a general-type store in Clarence, PA closed and the owners auctioned off the entire contents. At one point Dad contemplated hanging it behind our basement bar but never did. There is the patina of age and light dirt on it, along with the 80 cent price stickers (applied over 75 cent stickers) that I did not want to remove by cleaning. I'll leave that decision to the next owner.
There are some scratches to the paint on the lower back from when it was removed from the wall when the store was stripped. There is another set of scratches to the paint on the upper part of the back of unknown origin. Both of these defects are on the wall-facing side, so they will not be seen when hung. This was stored in a cool, dry place so what little rust that is on it is original and there when it was acquired.
I'm not sure of the exact age. The lettering is art deco, which was popular in America from 1919 to the later 1930's or early 1940's. The display measures about 14 5/8" long and the opening is about 3" in diameter. It can still be used if you care to stock it with fresh tins of snuff, which is still in production by Copenhagen. The display will hold about 15 tins of snuff tobacco. There is a metal loop at the top to hang on a nail and holes for screws at the base to go into the wall to keep the display steady. All in all, an interesting piece of Americana.
